Best Time to Visit Nepal | Month by Month Travel Guide

The best time to visit Nepal depends on what you want to do there. Trekking, wildlife safaris, cultural tours and rafting all have different ideal windows. Get the timing wrong and you could be hiking in monsoon mud or paying peak season prices for foggy mountain views. Here is exactly what to expect every month of the year.
The Two Peak Seasons in Nepal
Nepal has two periods when conditions are near perfect. October to November and March to May. These are the seasons when most international travelers visit and for good reason.
Autumn from October to November brings clear skies, stable weather and the best visibility of the Himalayan peaks. Temperatures are comfortable at lower altitudes and the trails are dry. This is the most popular trekking season and also when Nepal’s biggest festivals like Dashain and Tihar fall.
Spring from March to May is equally beautiful. Rhododendron forests bloom across the hills, the air is clear and temperatures start warming up pleasantly. This is also the main Everest climbing season when the mountain is buzzing with expedition teams.
October and November in Nepal
These are the best months for trekking in Nepal, full stop. Skies are reliably clear after the monsoon has washed the dust away, and views of Everest, Annapurna and the entire Himalayan range are at their sharpest.
Trail conditions are excellent. Teahouses are fully stocked and staffed. Temperatures on lower trails around Pokhara and Kathmandu are warm during the day and cool at night.
The downside is crowds. Popular routes like Poon Hill and the Annapurna Base Camp trail are busy in October and November. Book accommodation in advance, especially for the first two weeks of October.
If you are planning a trek in autumn, our Poon Hill Trek Package and Annapurna Circuit Trek are both perfectly timed for this season.
March, April and May in Nepal
Spring is the second best season and many experienced trekkers prefer it over autumn. The rhododendron forests between 2,000 and 3,500 metres burst into red and pink blooms that make the trails genuinely beautiful.
April is the sweet spot. Skies are clear, temperatures are mild and the trails are not yet as crowded as October. May gets progressively warmer at lower elevations and the pre-monsoon haze can reduce visibility toward the end of the month.
For wildlife, spring is excellent in Chitwan National Park. Animals are active and easy to spot before the summer heat sets in.
The Monsoon Season (June to September)
Nepal’s monsoon runs from June through September. Rainfall is heavy, particularly in July and August. Lower trails can be muddy and leeches are common. Flights to mountain airstrips like Lukla sometimes get delayed for days.
That said, the monsoon is not a reason to avoid Nepal entirely. The Mustang region in the rain shadow north of the Annapurna range stays dry during monsoon and is actually best visited from June to September. The landscape turns a vivid green and the crowds are minimal.
Cultural tours of Kathmandu work well in the monsoon too. The valley is lush and festivals like Indra Jatra fall in September.
December, January and February in Nepal
Winter is cold but underrated. High altitude trekking above 3,500 metres becomes difficult due to snow and frozen trails, but the lower routes like the Annapurna foothills and the short treks around Pokhara remain accessible.
Kathmandu and Pokhara are enjoyable in winter. Skies are often crystal clear in December and January, offering some of the best mountain views of the year from city viewpoints. Tourist numbers are lower so prices drop and you can often negotiate better rates on accommodation.
Chitwan National Park is actually at its best from November through February. Vegetation is lower and wildlife is easier to spot. This is the ideal time to book a Chitwan Safari Tour.
When to Visit Nepal for Trekking
For most treks the ideal window is October to November or March to May. Both seasons offer reliable weather and clear mountain views.
If you are trekking to Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Base Camp, aim for October or April. These are the months when conditions on the high passes are most stable and the views are most rewarding.
For easier treks like Poon Hill or the short routes around Pokhara, you have more flexibility. These trails are accessible from September through May with minor adjustments depending on the month.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best month to visit Nepal for the first time?
October is the single best month for a first visit to Nepal. The weather is stable, the skies are clear and both trekking and cultural sightseeing are at their best. Book your accommodation and permits at least 4 to 6 weeks in advance for October travel.
Can you visit Nepal in the monsoon season?
Yes, but with the right expectations. June to September brings heavy rainfall to most of Nepal. Cultural tours of Kathmandu and Pokhara work well. The Upper Mustang region is dry during monsoon and is a great alternative for trekkers. Avoid high altitude routes and jungle treks during peak monsoon months.
Is Nepal cold in December and January?
Kathmandu and Pokhara are cold but manageable in winter with daytime temperatures around 10 to 15 degrees Celsius. High altitude trekking above 3,500 metres becomes challenging due to snow. Lower altitude treks and cultural tours are perfectly fine in winter.
When are the cheapest flights to Nepal?
Flights to Kathmandu are generally cheaper during the off season from June to August and in December to February. Peak season airfares in October and November are higher due to demand, especially from India and Southeast Asia.
